ALL THE LOVE

From Bully, his latest, and the track I didn’t expect to be the one that stuck. André Troutman’s talk-box carries most of it — slippery, warm, almost tender — while the drums underneath keep it from ever settling into comfort. It’s the softest thing on an album that mostly isn’t soft, and that contrast is the whole appeal.

I put on Kanye records braced for the noise around them, and every so often one of these quiet, chant-driven moments cuts straight through anyway. This is that moment on Bully for me: proof the ear for a beautiful arrangement is still there under everything else.
